Tech Talk with AV

Say Ahhhh

My friends call me AV.
(pronounced AhhhhV--like you are having your throat checked at the doctor's office...say, "Ahhh.")

This page is a blog of sorts where I "talk tech."  I will share my own ideas and the ideas of others that I discover.

Platform Independent

It's not about the device; it's about the LEARNING.

What does Platform Independent mean?  It means that technology integration in the classroom isn't about utilizing one specific device.  It means that students and teachers utilize a wide variety of technological tools to augment and expand learning.   At Creston School, I've learned that we need to utilize any device that helps students learn.  We use both Windows and Macintosh operating systems (OS).  We use laptops and desktops.  We use handheld devices: iPads, iPods, and Android tablets or smartphones.  We utilize the Chrome OS on our ChromeBooks.  The focus is NOT on which device we will use.  The focus is on the LEARNING.  The device is simply a means to an end.

The following article sums up exactly how I feel about the debate between iPads and Chromebooks.

Debating iPads or Chromebooks for 1:1? Why not both?
Excerpt from the Article:  These districts have found that iPads and Chromebooks each have their strengths and weaknesses: iPads are better suited to younger kids and subjects such as math, whereas Chromebooks tend to work better for older kids, especially in subjects like English, where assignments require considerable writing from students. All four districts have experienced success with both devices and have not encountered any significant problems as a result of a mixed-platform environment. In fact, they said they see the mixed environment as a huge benefit for students.

ThingLink Fun

I've had so much fun doing ThingLink with teachers and students in the past few months! We've created a wide variety of projects.  One of my favorites was 6th Grade Biomes.  The 6th graders used Pixlr Express to create a collage of pictures.
